King and Queen

Eamon Friel  Cop. Con.

Now the king and queen of Barna are quite happy
But there’s something that can aggravate them still
For Sliabh Sneacht his big head rises high above them
But they murmur we are mountains he’s a hill
He would like to be their friend but they ignore him
Talking only to each other by the sea
And the king says to the queen he acts the big man if he can
Just remember he’s not royalty says she

So the King and Queen of Barna are contented
It’s a pleasant outdoor life and there’s the view
And they like to watch the colour of the water
As it changes to the sky’s completely blue
Looking west across the tide of that great ocean
Towards the hills of Fanad several miles away
And the King says to the Queen what place is that we’re looking at
That’s Australia or America she’ll say

They have seen the great Armada’s devastation
Viewed the Vikings and they watched Wolfe Tone’s arrest
Looking on as Hugh O’Neill sailed from Rathmullen
And the coffin ships from Derry heading west
And a little plane lands in from off the ocean
Here’s to you Amelia Earhart  all is gone
And the King says to the Queen it’s best that we don’t intervene
And whatever happens next we’ll just look on

There they are the King and Queen
In the place they’ve always been
They survey the passing scene
They’re looking on
