Leaving It So
Eamon Friel Cop.Con.
I went out in the dark of the night
Clouds in the wind wild and white
In and out danced the moon in delight
Jigging and jumping for joy
And the night wore its stars like a crown
Stood on the hill looking down
I remembered a street in this town
Where I had played as a boy
Letting it go leaving it so
Where I had played as a boy
And I thought of the friends I had made
Games in the streets that we played
I remembered the prayers that I prayed
In that great church long before
And the little slum streets that I’d known
Gone with the winds that have blown
But there’s that cathedral of stone
And I never darken its door
Letting it go leaving it so
I never darken its door
I remember the run of them yet
Old streets that I can’t forget
Tell me child is it you I regret
Have I been untrue to your light
Because you hadn’t learned how to lie
You hadn’t stopped asking why
And your future as big as the sky
Stretching before us this night
Letting it go leaving it so
Stretching before us this night
It was then that the moon struggled free
Wind took the clouds towards the sea
And the man in the moon looked at me
Searching for something to say
I said look at those wounds on your face
I wouldn’t be in your place
He said look at the whole human race
Tired and torn on life’s way
Letting it go leaving it so
Tired and torn on life’s way
There was one moon above but below
I saw another on show
His reflection was there in the flow
Of the river that ran darkly on
So I bid him farewell as you do
Didn’t look back but I knew
That the clouds had again blocked his view
Moon in the river was gone
Letting it go leaving it so
Moon in the river was gone
