Not As We Know It
Eamon Friel Cop. Con.
Raining all the morning streets and streets of rain
I don’t think the day will ever dry
Raining all the morning all that fine rain keeps on falling
It’s as if the streets are full of sky
I don’t mind the weather or the arrogance of youth
They say I’m out of touch I hear their jeers
Yesterday they told me I’d been living in the sixties
Says I you’re right I lived there for ten years
It’s the less you know the better make your mind a wall
When’s the last time you heard someone quote a poet
When’s the last time you heard anyone quote anything at all
Ah it’s life Jim but not as we know it
Companions of my schooldays up against the bar
I ask them of their dreams they haven’t any
I listen to them talking and you’d swear their lives were over
I had not thought death had undone so many
There midnight’s all a glimmer noon’s a purple glow
Still I am the master of my fate
Oh I would climb the blue air I would kneel all night in prayer
They also serve who only stand and wait |
